The Rock Art of Rapa Nui

The famous double canoe petroglyph panel, from La Perouse Bay, on the north coast of the island. The panel measures ten meters long. Note the smaller canoe shapes, sea forms, and fishhooks. Numerous cupules are on the panel, including some large ones that collect rainwater. These shallow man-made basins are known on the island as taheta. A row of tiny cupules is along the edge of the main canoe shape as well as inside it. It is tempting to think these may indicate persons who originally came on the great canoe. either surround the designs or run through them. A large deep basin (taheta) is surrounded by tiny cupules. One of the tuna motifs has X-ray bone structure showing.
