THE CIAR, INTERPRETATION CENTRE FOR THE PRADES MOUNTAINS,
MONTBLANC (TARRAGONA, SPAIN)

The CIAR, Centro de Interpretación del Arte Rupestre for the Prades Mountains, was inaugurated in the town of Montblanc, capital of the Conca de Barberà (Catalonia, Spain) on the 9th of September 2005. 15 post-Paleolithic groupings of rock art have been discovered in this region in the following styles: Levantine, Naturalistic-Stylised and Schematic-Abstract. The first is linked to hunter-gatherer cultures and the others to agricultural and pastoral cultures.

reproductions of the art of the Prades Mountains.

The new Centre is installed in an historic building which is part of the Regional Museum. Its main objective, apart from disseminating knowledge of and protecting the rock art heritage, is to create an entity devoted to research and documentation, as well as creating a forum for prehistoric art, in liaison with local cultural associations.

Its main objective, apart from disseminating knowledge of and protecting the rock art heritage, is to create an entity devoted to research and documentation, as well as creating a forum for prehistoric art, in liaison with local cultural associations.

The contents exhibited are presented to advantage by means of back-lighted walls, dioramas and replicas and reproductions of the region’s rock art, spread over eleven galleries which show: the region’s physical characteristics; the geology; the appearance of humans; art and man; an in-depth introduction to prehistoric art; the Iberian Peninsula’s rock art; the rock art of the Prades Mountains and Catalonia; rock engravings; the World Heritage; the sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List; research, conservation, the dissemination of information about and the management of rock art.
