Due to these accomplishments, he was elected Director of the National Museum of Natural History (1982-1990). He founded the Chilean Society of Archaeology being its President for 16 years. He organized the VII and VIII Congress of Chilean Archaeology, and edited the majority of transactions of these congresses.

His contributions to the study of the Archaic and late periods in the north of Chile, his studies in the valley of Copiapó and investigation of Molle, Diaguita and Inca cultures in Chile are especially important.

Among the subjects to which he felt specially inclined was the study of rock art. He investigated numerous rock art sites and participated in numerous rock art symposia between 1966 and 2000. He published the first comprehensive book on Chilean rock art with Grete Mostny, apart from many regional studies. He received a special tribute at the international congress organized by SIARB in Cochabamba, Bolivia in 1997 (together with C. N. Dubelaar, Carlos Gradin and Antonio Nuñez Jiménez).
