Just north of Ridgecrest, California on the China Lake Naval Air Weapons base, we have a world class treasure trove of prehistoric art. This is the greatest concentration of rock art in the entire Western Hemisphere! There are more depictions of bighorn sheep in the Coso Range than in all the rock art sites in the entire Great Basin combined, which begs the questions:
Why the obsession with making bighorn sheep petroglyphs?
How old are these images, and how do we know it?
Why did the numbers of their rock art images expand so much and then die away so quickly?
What finally happened to these people?
These and other questions will be addressed during our upcoming seminar and field trip.
Rock Art 101 is offering an advanced Seminar (designated Rock Art 102) with new updated content, new subjects, keynote lecture, and field trip program to be held at the Heritage Inn, Ridgecrest, California on April 14th & 15th 2012. This special program is limited to 20 participants. The curriculum includes a series of newly developed presentations addressing the most often asked questions and topics pertaining to Coso Rock Art. These presentations are specially designed at a level understandable to professionals, amateurs and the interested general public.
