In Paris on June 5th 2010, Dr Jean Clottes "was very honoured" to receive in Paris the Grande Médaille d’Or avec Plaquette d’Honneur (Great Gold Medal with special honours) for the Sciences from “Arts-Sciences-Lettres”.

It is an illustrious Academic Society that has been in existence since 1915. Each year they give one such medal for Arts, one for Letters and one for Sciences. It is the first time a rock art specialist has received this award, and only the second time it has been awarded to Prehistorian (the first prehistorian was Pr. Yves Coppens a few years ago).

Jean Clottes told the Bradshaw Foundation that whilst he was obviously delighted and honoured by this prestigious award, he was especially pleased with the fact that it represented an official recognition of rock art research as scientific.
