Now these fundamental mysteries that have shaped the study of human origins for centuries will be explored in a new gallery at the Natural History Museum (NHM), which will trace our species' evolution from the first upright primate through to modern humans.
It will feature the Wall of Skulls at the entrance: the first adult female Neanderthal cranium ever discovered, the 'Peking Man' skull which represents some of the oldest evidence of human habitation in China and the Forbes Quarry, or 'Gibraltar' skull, believed to be from an adult Neanderthal female.
Professor Chris Stringer, the NHM's research leader in human origins, states that the NHM uses the latest research techniques such as CT scanning and DNA analysis in order to uncover the origins and dispersals of humans across the world.
The gallery will explore lifestyles and environments, which of course have shaped today's modern humans, as well as investigate new discoveries such as the Rising Star Caves of South Africa.
The new human evolution gallery opens at the Natural History Museum on Friday December 18. Admission is free.
