Heavily pregnant woman

Discovered at Kostienki 1. On the river Don in modern Russia a complex of over 50 archaeological sites is known by the collective name of Kostienki. Discovered at Kostienki 1, this limestone sculpture, representing an individual at a particular stage of pregnancy, was deliberately broken before being buried with broken bones, artefacts and ash from the hearths in a shallow pit. The surviving remnant has been sculpted in low relief, with the hands resting on the stomach, clearly defined bracelets and belt and prominent navel.
