Jebel Uweinat from Sudan - March 2013 (vehicle dependent, 17 days)

Jebel Uweinat is the highest mountain in the Libyan Desert (Eastern Sahara), located on the convergence of the Egypt-Libya-Sudan borders. The region is so remote, that it remained a blank spot on the map even after the North and South Poles had been conquered. Ever since its discovery in 1924, the mountain was known to harbour prehistoric rock art. This expedition will approach the mountain from the Sudanese side using 4wd vehicles, spending about 8 days there. There will also be an opportunity to visit the principal Nile valley monuments of Sudan along the way. Note that the trip will be of an exploratory nature, making the approach from the Sudanese side for the first side, so it will require a degree of flexibility and the acceptance that things may not quite go as planned.

Upper Brandberg, Namibia - June 2013 (helicopter supported, 11 Days)

The Upper Brandberg contains one of the finest and best preserved ensemble of prehistoric rock art on the African continent. Very few people have had the opportunity to see them, on account of the extremely challenging terrain and the very demanding climb and treks required to reach the sites. This will be a rare opportunity for anyone with average physical abilities to see these sites on a fully helicopter supported expedition, visiting the most important localities in the upper part of the mountain.

Upper Brandberg, Namibia - June 2013 (trekking expedition, 12 Days)

Some of the finest rock art sites in the Upper Brandberg are only accessible on foot. On this expedition (immediately after the helicopter supported trip) we will visit the upper sections of valleys in the North-East quadrant of the mountain (Karoab, Umuab, Nuwuarib and Tsisab) making our descent past the White Lady shelter. We will use a helicopter for the ascent and the positioning of supplies, however the treks and the descent will be very demanding due to the extremely difficult terrain. This expedition is only suitable for very experienced trekkers in a top physical condition.

Tassili N’Ajjer, Algeria - October 2013 (trekking expedition, 10 Days)

Following on the success of our 2011 and 2012 visits, the Tassili trips are planned on a regular annual basis. The treks involve a moderate ascent of about 300-400 metres to the top of the plateau top, after which it is an easy walk of 8-10 kilometres per day on good flat terrain, visiting the prime concentrations of rock art sites. There are two key areas of rock art on the Tassili, the Tamrit-Sefar region near Djanet made famous by the Henri Lhote missions, and the Tadjelahin area near Iherir, much less known, but containing the finest rock art anywhere in the Sahara. As Algerian authorities open and close areas open for travel to foreigners on short notice, exact itinerary will be finalized a couple of months prior to start.

Tibesti & Ennedi, Chad - November 2013 (vehicle supported, 18 days)

The Tibesti and Ennedi regions of Chad offer an amazing combination of prehistoric rock art and dramatic landscapes, very rarely visited in the past couple of decades. Based on encouraging news from Chad, this expedition is planning to explore the northern regions (and if possible, to make a 5 day trek to ascend the Emi Koussi volcano (3445m), highest point of the Sahara). Note that this expedition will be of an exploratory nature, with true conditions and possibilities only being revealed as we progress on the spot. This will require a degree of flexibility and the acceptance that things may not quite go as planned. This trip is primarily suitable for people with much experience in travel to the more remote parts of Africa, fully understanding the implications of being the first into such areas before the tourist crowds arrive.
