Lascaux
A complex of caves in Dordogne, southwestern France, famous for its Upper Palaeolithic cave paintings, estimated to be 17,000 years old. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Later Stone Age
The period in Africa commencing in different regions between about 40,000 and 20,000 years ago, when very small stone tools (mounted in wood or bone handles) predominated. Metal began to replace stone tools in the north after about 2,500 years ago and metallurgy spread south, slowly replacing the Stone Age.
