Request for information

The Bradshaw Foundation has been contacted by one its viewers, Frank Fowler in Canada, with information about the rock art of the Sierra Ibiapaba, the mountainous region located in the states of Ceara and Piaui. This area was originally inhabited by various indigenous groups such as the Tabajaras and the Tapuias.

As Frank's images convey, taken during several expeditions with his wife to this region, the rock art paintings, engravings and cupules on the quartzite are both extensive and intricate. The rock art sites are located a few kilometres east of the city of Vicosa do Ceara, but in remote terrain. 

We would be interested to hear from archaeologists and institutions, such as the Universidade Federal do Ceara, as well as other explorers, with information about these significant rock art sites and associated archaeology.

The fabulous painting above - 'Danca dos Tapuias' - by Albert Eckhout depicts the Tapuias indigenous group. Eckhout, 1610 - 1666, was a Dutch portrait and still life painter, born in Groningen, and among the first European artists to paint scenes from the New World.
