Zimbabwe rock art safari
2nd to 13th may 2018
David Coulson, Executive Chairman of the Trust for African Rock Art, will be leading a rock art safari in Mashonaland and Matabeleland, including the Matobo Hills World Heritage Site.
Rock art is found in many parts of Africa but most of the best art is found either in the central Sahara or in Southern Africa, and Zimbabwe hosts many of Africa's finest sites. Most of Zimbabwe's paintings are believed to be the work of ancestral bushmen and some are known to be thousands of years old.
I have been invited by my friend, Pierre Jaunet of Catalina Safaris, to lead an 11 day rock art safari with him in May 2018 during which I will show you at least 20 of Zimbabwe's greatest painted caves.
African rock art has been my passion for over 25 years. Together with Alec Campbell of Botswana's National Museums I published a large illustrated book on Africa's rock art some years ago, the definitive book on this remarkable heritage. In
1996, together with Mary Leakey, I founded TARA, Trust for African Rock Art, whose mission is to create a global awareness of the importance and vulnerability of this heritage, survey sites and work together with governments and communities to preserve the art.
