In Feburary 2024 Röam, in collaboration with the Trust for African Rock Art (TARA) will be leading an expedition into the Algerian Sahara.

Venture with us into the heart of the Tadrart Rouge and the Tassili N’ajjer, where you will experience the magnitude and freedom of the Sahara in its rawest and purest form.

By day you will discover the region’s natural and historical wonders, wind your way through fiery red sand dunes, explore beautiful wadi’s and uncover a stunning array of ancient rock art and the many fascinating stories that this holds. At night you will camp under the desert sky and its piercing blanket of stars.

The expedition will be led by rock art expert David Coulson and Röam’s Director, Carissa Western, together with local Tuareg guides.

The Tadrart Rouge: tucked away in Algeria’s southeastern corner lies the Tadrart Rouge, one of the most diverse and dramatic desert landscapes on the planet. This fiery face of wilderness conceals a wealth of natural, cultural, and historical treasure. Stepping into the Tadrart is like passing through a doorway into another world - one governed by nature and oblivious to time.

Here you will find one of the most spectacular collections of rock art in Africa - dating back millennia to an era when the Sahara was predominately grassland. Depicting a landscape teaming with savannah game and strewn with messages to passing travelers in ancient Tamashek, the rock art in the Tadrart paints a fascinating story of human and natural history.

This region of the Sahara is the heartland of the nomadic Tuareg. Born with sand in their blood the Tuareg have expertly navigated this vast landscape for centuries, intimately familiar with the desert and in total harmony with the harshest of its elements.

Travel Logistics: We will arrange all aspects of your travel while you are in Algeria, including the Sahara expedition, Algerian visas and internal flights from Algiers to Southern Algeria.
